Reflection, Gratitude, and Unity in the Castro District

In those fast-paced weeks surrounding Halloween, I often find myself in a whirlwind of activity. We're caught between the rush of last-minute Halloween shoppers and the meticulous preparations for the upcoming Christmas season. With the added frenzy of this year's Halloween festivities, I sometimes feel like a headless chicken trying to maintain balance while wearing heels!

As November arrives, I don’t see things calming down but that’s ok because we can look forward to an array of exciting events. From the warmth of Thanksgiving gatherings to the much-anticipated tree-lighting ceremony, this month promises plenty of memorable moments. Read on to explore what November has in the pipeline.

Monday, November 20 | Transgender Day of Remembrance

Transgender Day of Remembrance, often called TDOR, is observed annually on November 20. This day serves as a time for communities to honor and remember transgender people whose lives have been tragically cut short. It is also a crucial opportunity to raise awareness about the violence and discrimination faced by transgender individuals worldwide.

Transgender Day of Remembrance is not only a time for reflection but also a call to action. In the Castro District and around the world, this day emphasizes the need for unity, acceptance, and the eradication of discrimination and violence against transgender individuals. It is a poignant reminder that, even in a neighborhood known for its acceptance, there is still work to be done to create a world where everyone can live without fear of violence or prejudice.

Thursday, November 23 | Thanksgiving Day

Also, we look forward to Thanksgiving Day this year, on the 23rd of November. This special day is a time for us to come together with loved ones and reflect on the many blessings in our lives. It's a time to express gratitude for the abundance of good things that surround us, from the warmth of family and friends to the simple pleasures of life.

As we gather around the table, we're reminded of the importance of thankfulness and the bonds that unite us. In a world filled with challenges, Thanksgiving offers a precious moment to count our blessings and appreciate the simple joys that make life beautiful.

And while many businesses are closed for the holiday, some of our favorite merchant members are open and ready to make your Thanksgiving memorable.

Monday, November 27 | Harvey Milk Memorial Ceremony

Immediately following the Tree Lighting Ceremony on Monday, November 27, the annual Harvey Milk Memorial Ceremony will take place  at 7 p.m. This event holds special significance as it commemorates the life and legacy of Harvey Milk, an influential figure in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. It serves as a reminder of the progress made in the fight for equality and honors those who have dedicated their lives to this cause.

The back-to-back scheduling of these two ceremonies creates a powerful and meaningful evening of celebration and remembrance in the Castro community.

As November unfolds, it's clear that our community is in for a vibrant and connected month. From Thanksgiving feasts to festive gatherings and heartwarming acts of kindness, the spirit of togetherness prevails. Let's embrace the opportunities to make our neighborhood an even more welcoming and tightly-knit place to call home this November and beyond.
